Our History
The Heart and History of Raspberry Island Lodge
Raspberry Island Lodge was born out of the shared dream of three families—the Ivies, Balls, and Browns—who saw something magical on this rugged, pristine slice of Alaska. Established in 1996, the lodge has been family-owned and operated since its founding, welcoming guests from all over the world to experience the incredible beauty and fishing this area has to offer.
Our lodge sits on historic ground, once the main base for Wakefield Fisheries, known for pioneering the king crab fishery. In 1964, after a massive tsunami reshaped the Alaskan coastline, the cannery was destroyed and the property changed hands. It was eventually sold to three Wakefield cannery employees for fishing and hunting. When the owners were ready to sell our families saw the opportunity to create something new—an Alaskan fishing lodge where adventure meets family hospitality. And so, Raspberry Island Lodge was born.
Since our founding, the lodge has been a true family affair. For 25 years, Mike Ivie led the lodge, shaping it into a place of warmth, adventure, and genuine hospitality. Mike’s son, Eric Ivie, practically grew up here, first setting foot on Raspberry Island at the age of 10. After decades of learning the ropes, Eric officially took the helm in 2022, continuing his family’s legacy with the same passion his father had. His wife, Sidney, manages the housekeeping team with care and precision, often accompanied by their young children who are growing up in the lodge just as Eric did.
In 2022, ownership consolidated to the Ivie and Ball families, who are dedicated to continuing the legacy of family-focused hospitality. Joining Eric and Sidney are Eric's lifelong friend, Josh, his wife, Kendra, and their children. Together, this close-knit team brings a personal touch to the lodge, fostering an environment where guests feel like family from the moment they arrive.
When you come to Raspberry Island Lodge, you’re not just staying at a fishing lodge—you’re stepping into our home. Our goal is that every guest leaves with unforgettable memories, and when it’s time to part, it feels like saying goodbye to family. Our commitment to personal, genuine service runs deep, and we hope that when you leave, you’ll already be looking forward to returning home to Raspberry Island Lodge.
